Work Package 5

Design of pilot scale RED and PRO systems (partners: CSM+DTU+ GFS+AQP +DHI)

WP5 will design and test RED and PRO pilot scale power producing units. WP5 will use the results from WP1-4 in terms of theoretical and experimental bench-scale performance indicators of energy efficiency and membrane power density, critical to the potential feasibility of RED and PRO energy production and use this to design integrated pilot scale demonstrators.

Specifically WP5 will:

  1. identify estuaries and deltas for RED with relatively stable vertical salinity gradients as these allow the use of short water transport systems in contrast to wellmixed estuaries with horizontal salinity gradients.

  2. identify industrial hypersaline streams and investigate how PRO systems (membranes pumps and pressure-exchangers) may be designed and integrated as an energy harvesting operation within industrial processes. Candidate streams include fracking waste water and brines (e.g. RO retentate from desalination and dairy processes).

  3. identify the level of pre-treatment needed for RED and PRO (seen in relation to the anti-fouling measures developed in WP4 and how will this affect the overall feasibility.

  4. use GFS’s and DHI’s worldwide presence and identify potential export markets and this knowledge will be used to design relevant testing protocols.
